CULINARY skills may be a given gift for some people but there are others who can’t even whip up an omelette without burning it. With proper training, one can actually prepare a seven-course meal, consisting of delicious appetisers and soups, a lip-smacking main course and mouth-watering desserts.
If you are interested in pursuing a course in food service management and culinary study, why not consider the Food Institute of Malaysia TIM? Managed by Mutual Empire Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd, it was set up in 1998. Since then, the institute has produced more than 1,050 graduates in food service management and culinary study. The institute offers diploma courses in Food service and Restaurant Management, Culinary Arts and Pastry and Bakery.
What is great about the diploma in culinary arts is that graduates can proceed to second year at Thames Valley University, (TVU) United Kingdom for BSc (Hons) in Culinary Arts Management, without much hassle.
Meanwhile Diploma in Foodservice and Restaurant Management graduates, may proceed to either second year in TVU for B.A (Hons) in Hospitality. Management, majoring in Food Studies or BA (Hons) in International Hotel Management. They can also go straight to third year at the Weidner University, USA, for BSc in Hospitality Management. The diploma courses are conducted in two "d a half years. It is accredited by'' LAN and approved by the City and Guilds on London.
The institute also offers a competency course for those wishing to sharpen their culinary skills. Courses offered include culinary classes, carving skills, pastry baking, bakery and foodservice course. It also conducts internal foodservice training courses for KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd. Students will undergo two-month training and work for 12 months atany KFCH chain of restaurants. Food and lodging is provided during the two months of training. During the second month of training (practical training month) students will be provided with allowances.
Together with KFCH, FIM will be conducting a recruitment drive throughout Malaysia for this programme beginning tomorrow till Dec 19. Those interested in weekend cooking classes can participate in the Spiced Chef Cooking Club. Members will get to learn how to cook Thai; Malay, Western, Japanese, pastry and bakery dishes.
There is also a membership package for adults and children (aged between seven and 12, years) Fees for demonstration classes range from RM50 to RM100 and fees for hands-on classes range from RM80-RM150. Short courses for weekend cooking for a period of eight to 12 weeks for specific types of cooking such as pastry, bakery, Malay, Chinese, Western, Thai, Indian and Japanese dishes are also available.
Fees for the short courses for weekend cooking start from RM1,500 per course. Meanwhile, members of the public can taste the unique dishes prepared by the students and experienced chefs at Bouquet Garni Restaurant at FIM, Kelana Jaya. Intake for the diploma courses are in January, September and December every year. The institute is now open for the January 2004 intake.
